Home Crisis Planning Essentials

Create a household crisis plan that covers roles, supplies, communication, and decision-making before trouble starts.

Home crisis planning gives your household a framework for action when normal routines are disrupted. If a storm, outage, or local emergency occurs, a written plan reduces confusion and helps everyone know what to do next. Prepared families do better when roles and expectations are clear before a crisis starts.

Begin with communication. Decide how family members will check in, where they will meet if separated, and who will contact relatives outside the area. Then map out basic responsibilities such as who gathers supplies, who checks on pets, and who handles utilities or transportation. Even simple role assignments can save time when stress is high.

Your plan should also account for food, water, lighting, first aid, and shelter. Make sure the supplies match the size of your household and that everyone knows where they are stored. Review your plan at least twice a year, especially before storm season or travel periods when routines may change.

The strongest crisis plan is one that is easy to explain and simple to follow. Keep copies of key numbers, documents, and procedures in a secure but accessible place. Preparation is not about expecting the worst every day. It is about giving your household confidence and direction when uncertainty arrives.
